Consider the work of God: for who can make that straight, which he hath made crooked?   Eccl. 7:13

My pastor was talking about giving credit to God when we are successful. That is something that I thought a lot about in college.

If I worked very hard and got an A, I was to say that the Lord helped me but if I goofed off, I would fail. It seemed to me that it was what I did that made the difference.

My pastor used an illustration that helped me to understand. He said its something like a fly inside a glass. No matter how hard that fly struggles he will never be able to get out of the glass by himself. If someone is merciful and tips the glass a bit, it is still up to the fly to scamper away. It wasn't because of the fly's effort that he was able to escape, but if he sat there and did nothing he would not have gotten away.

If I didn't make the effort I would have failed, however, if the Lord didn't provide for my success, I would have failed, no matter how hard I tried.
